MILWAUKEE -- Ryan Braun hadnt done much except get hit by a pitch. He made up for it with one swing in the bottom of the ninth. Braun was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning that scored a run and had an RBI single in the ninth, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. "I got beat up pretty good," Braun said. "Ill take it. Ill take them both." Braun thought the Rockies might pitch around him. He had already struck out twice and grounded out while Jonathan Lucroy had two hits and a RBI. "Typically, there is probably a higher likelihood that they pitch around me," Braun said. "I have been swinging so terribly and Luc has been swinging so great that that combination probably enticed them to at least come at me a little bit." Rockies manager Walt Weiss told reliever Matt Belisle to pitch carefully to Braun, but the strategy didnt work. "Ill always take responsibility for that one," Walt Weiss said. "Could have put him on. Its a tough situation for Mattie. Hes trying to get him to expand for a couple of pitches. The ball was maybe a little up. Braun went up and got it." Mark Reynolds led off the ninth with a single off Belisle (2-3) and advanced on a sacrifice by Jean Segura. Scooter Gennett pinch hit for Francisco Rodriguez (3-2) and was intentionally walked. The runners advanced on a passed ball by catcher Michael McKenry. After Rickie Weeks went down swinging, Braun drilled Belisles first pitch up the middle. "I dont think they were trying to throw it where he ended up throwing it," Braun said after collecting his first walk-off hit since 2011. Josh Rutledge tied the game when he homered off Rodriguez with one out in the ninth. Rutledge hit a 3-2 pitch that just barely cleared the wall in left for his second homer this season. Rodriguez was trying to help Kyle Lohse win his third straight start. Lohse has been victimized by five blown saves this season. He allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings and came within two outs of beating the Rockies for the second time in five days. Sunday, he pitched five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits in the Brewers 6-5 win in Colorado. Rodriguez leads the majors with 27 saves, but this was his third blown save this season. Lohse had plenty of sympathy for Rodriguez. "I feel bad for K-Rod because hes been pitching so well, but the bottom line is we won," Lohse said. "He came in and did what he does. Ill take K-Rod closing out one of my games any time." The Brewers became the first team in the majors to record 50 wins. Their NL-leading record (50-32) is the best in team history through 82 games. They have 13 games left to top the team record of 54 wins before the All-Star game. The Brewers also improved to 5-0 in the season series with the Rockies. "Its nice to be the first one to 50 wins, for sure," Braun said. "Were excited with the way that weve played so far, but theres still a lot of baseball left." The Brewers went ahead 2-1 in the seventh. Khris Davis doubled off Nick Masset to start the inning and Reynolds followed with a walk. Both advanced on a sacrifice by Segura. When Lyle Overbay was announced as the pinch hitter for Lohse, the Rockies brought in Rex Brothers. The Brewers countered with Martin Maldonado, who struck out swinging. After Weeks walked, Adam Ottavino came on to face Braun and hit him with the first pitch. Lucroy hit into a fielders choice for the third out. The Rockies scored their run in the seventh on a sacrifice by pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes that scored Rutledge. The Brewers scored first when Lucroy chopped an RBI single over second base off rookie Tyler Matzek in the sixth. Matzek went six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. NOTES: The Rockies challenged the call when Carlos Gomez was ruled safe at second in the eighth inning. The decision was reversed in under 2 minutes. . With the Blue Jays failure to land Ervin Santana and the continuing spring struggles, to varying degrees, of Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond and J.A. Happ, Ricky Romeros name is being brought up on an increasing basis. Its getting lumped in with that large group competing for a job in the starting rotation. Manager John Gibbons was effusive about Romeros Wednesday performance, in which the former ace lefthander allowed one run over four innings of work. "All hes got to do is get it in the zone," said Gibbons. "That ball is moving every which way too. Its tough to square him up. If he gets in the zone, he makes them swing, you add that great changeup on top of that, thats where hes had his success. Where he ran into trouble he was just scattering it. He was walking guys, things like that. Hes getting in the zone now and thats the key." Baby steps, though. Romero did walk two batters and hit another. He was the beneficiary of a beautifully turned double play and of an outfield assist on a base hit by Jose Bautista, who threw out a runner at third. If Romero was to land the starting job, at this moment it seems remote, the Jays would likely begin the season with an eight-man bullpen. The fact Romero isnt on the 40-man roster works against him, performance over the last two seasons aside, but he is owed at least $15.6-million over the remaining term on his contract and the Jays would love to get some value for it. Romero has simplified his approach. "Like Ive told Kratz and Thole, the guys who have caught me the last two times, just set up down the middle and stuff will move," he said. "I feel like Im getting that movement back with the changeup and the sinker. There are going to be times when I come out of my delivery a little bit but I think the good thing now is that Im realizing when Im coming out of it. Its just slowing myself back down and my delivery is going to be key, just finding that rhythm." One noticeable difference from last season: when Romero talks about feeling good, feeling confident, his eyes and his body language emit the same. That hasnt been the case. "I definitely feel like its in the right direction and how can you not," said Romero. "Everything Ive been through, this feels good. Im not going to get ahead of myself or anything like that but its taking it day by day and working.dddddddddddd I think if I do that, just continue to work, work, and see the little wins each and every day and remain positive I think Im going to be just fine. The rest will take care of itself." Its a long road back to being the 15-game winner from 2011 and Romero may never regain his All-Star form. But hes trying. His manager hopes the crisis of confidence is a thing of the past. "Some guys never rebound from it," said manager John Gibbons. "What hes done here this spring, we noticed it, first started noticing it, just warming up in the bullpen, just throwing their sides and in BP, before we even started playing games, he looked different. Were all pulling for him here." McGowan feeling better Dustin McGowan threw two scoreless innings in Thursdays 7-5 loss to the Astros. It was his first game action in 10 days thanks to a stomach bug. It was the same illness that affected Sergio Santos earlier this month. "I lost eight (pounds,) exactly, too," said McGowan. "I think its the eight pound flu or whatever it was. Next time Sergio needs to stay home." After years of battling shoulder problems, McGowan made 25 appearances out of the bullpen last season, posting a 2.45 ERA while striking out, essentially, one hitter per inning pitched. Hes stretching out this spring, longing to be a starter once more. He felt no side effects from his sickness-induced layoff. "I felt good," said McGowan. "For me, thats the most important thing is feeling good. Pitches are starting to come around and location is starting to get better so its a positive outing today for me." McGowan seems to understand the unlikelihood that hell end up in the rotation, admitting "Its hard to say in my head Im going to be a starter but thats where I want to be." Still, hell continue to try to pitch deeper into games. "Ill keep going this path but if Im at four innings by the end of spring, if they want me in the bullpen thats easy to transfer right into," he said. "If you throw one or two, youre ready for it easily." Has he gained the eight pounds back he lost while sick? "You dont see this," joked McGowan, pointing to his stomach. "Ive got it." ' ' '
NEW YORK -- Surgery, suspensions and thuggery. The storylines surrounding the Eastern Conference final reached Shakespearean proportions Friday. As he was in Game 3 Thursday night, Montreal fourth-liner Brandon Prust was slap bang in the middle of the mayhem. What had seemed like a quiet off-day quickly turned dramatic when New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault revealed that forward Derek Stepan, laid out by an unpenalized blindside hit from Prust two minutes 45 seconds into the game, had suffered a broken jaw that needed surgery. Three hours later, Rangers agitator Dan Carcillo was suspended 10 games for physical abuse of an official on a play that came minutes after the Prust hit, as New York looked for retribution. The Carcillo incident came 5:51 into Thursdays game after a fight between Derek Dorsett of the Rangers and Prust. Carcillo, a fourth-liner, had been penalized for charging Prust on the play. The league said Carcillo "physically applied force to linesman Scott Driscoll while being escorted to the penalty box." The suspension was automatic under category 2 of Rule 40.3, titled Physical Abuse of Officials. Prust, meanwhile, was handed a two-game suspension for interference for the Stepan hit later Friday. It has added more drama to a series that saw Montreals all-world goalie Carey Price sent to the sidelines in Game 1 after coming out the worst for wear in a collision with six-foot-three, 230-pound Ranger Chris Kreider. For Vigneault, the missed Prust call Thursday set off a domino effect whose ripples were still being felt the next day. "Four referees missed the call," Vigneault said. "Stepan is injured. The same player that called the hit on Price accidental but on purpose. Late hit, everything that you want to get out of the game, that was his hit on Stepan. "And what saddens me about that hit is, if the call is made on the ice, were on a five-minute power play, and what happened to Dan Carcillo, and what Dan did is inexcusable, and hes going to pay a big price for it, but if the call is made on the ice, hes not put in that position. "So its unfortunate. Step (Stepan) right now at this time is probably getting operated on. He broke his jaw (Thursday), so well have an idea of the time frame (Saturday). But those are stuff that happens during the game that you have to deal with, and thats what were going to try to do." Dressed in jeans and flip-flops, Vigneault looked like he was in relaxation mode. But he was clearly irate at a sequence of events which he believes could have been avoided. Stepan went briefly to the dressing room after the hit, yelling over his shoulder at Prust as he exited. But he returned later in the period and amazingly played a total of 17:45 in the game. A team spokesman said X-rays that night were negative. But Stepan was in pain and saw a specialist Friday, when further tests detected the broken jaw. It seems unlikely that Stepan, who centres Rick Nash and Kreider on the Rangers top line, will be back any time soon. New York leads the series to two games to one. Prust, a former Ranger who counts Canadian UFC lightweight Sam (Hands of Stone) Stout as a friend, was not made available Friday as both teams, skipping practice in advance of Game 4 Sunday, offered up their coaches and select players. Montreal coach Michel Therrien defended his player. "His intention was not to hurt anyone," he said. "Like Kreider, his intention, even if he was going hard to the net and then laying on Carey Price, Im sure his intention was not to hurt Carey Price. Brandon Prust, he tried to finish his check. His intention, honestly, was not to hurt Stepan." Then Therrien suggested the Canadiens knew better than anybody about losing a star player. "If there is a team that can understand the loss of a player, its us. We lost Carey Price in the first game of the series with the hit on Kreider when he hit Carey Price, and we felt frustrated at the time. Were still frustrated not having our goalie, our No. 1 most important player." Therrien, taking a page from Vigneaults book from the Price injury debate, called it "a hockey hit." Habs forward David Desharnais called it a clean hit, with Prust just wanting to get his team going. "You never want to see a guy injured like that but, like I said, we were fighting for our lives (Thursday) and we wanted to set the tone," he said. At five foot seven, Desharnais is one of the Hobbit-like Canadiens. But the first-liner wins praise from his coach for his compete level. And he knows the value of getting under an opponents skin, as Prust clearly did in Game 3. "They were not happy about it," he said of the Rangers. "Everybody got a little chirp here and there and the game was on." A day later, the Rangers still wanted justice. "I think guys were unhappy there wasnt a call on the play," Kreider told reporters. "Obviously, it was away from the play so not a lot of people saw it. But I think the sentiment today is the same as it was yesterday, that it wasnt a clean hit. Hopefully the league deals with it justly." Kahale Warring Youth Jersey . Igrid Kaveelaars knew. The wife of Edmonton Oilers coach Dallas Eakins could see her husband was ready to return to work shortly after last season ended.A 28th place finish will do that.A week to 10 days go by and my wife said, Youre ready to go back to the rink now, Eakins said, I am. You want to get back in there and get back in the fight.Edmonton hasnt qualified for the playoffs since the 2005-06 season, but Eakins believes there a positives heading into the upcoming campaign.Weve added size, weve added depth and weve added some people who can make plays. You start putting your lineup on the board and these are established NHL players that give you some comfort, Eakins said. With the additions of those players and then with all of our other guys getting another year of experience, its a step in the right direction. Here are some things to keep in mind before Edmontons season begins with game against Calgary on Oct. 9:NOT STATISTICAL ANOMALIES: The debate that has ceaselessly raged between advocates for hockey analytics and those that disbelieve can be distilled to one fundamental question: Are these numbers fact or fiction? In the case of the Oilers, though, the numbers cannot be parsed into anything other than hard evidence of a woefully subpar squad. At the end of the 2013-14 season, the Oilers ranked last in goals-against average (3.26), and were tied for 22nd, 16th and 13th, respectively, in goals per game (2.43), power-play success rate (17 per cent) and penalty-kill success rate (82.1 per cent).NET LOSS: The Oilers employed a revolving door in goal last season, as Richard Bachman, Ilya Bryzgalov, Devan Dubnyk, Viktor Fasth, Jason Labarbera and Ben Scrivens each stated their case to be Edmontons top goaltender. In a combined 90 games with the Oilers, the sextet combined for 29-44-9 record and 2.85 goals-against average.BOLSTERED BACK END: In an attempt to address the defensive decencies, Edmonton traded for--and subsequently signed to a two-year, $9 million deal-Nikita Nikitin, and signed free agents Mark Fayne (four years, $14.5 million) and Keith Aulie (one year, $800,000).FORWARD REFORMATION: General manager Craig MacTavish added forward depth in the off-season by trading for Tampa Bay right wing Teddy Purcell, and signing New York Rangers left wing Benoit Pouliot. Purcell and Pouliot add size a€” both are 6-foot-3 a€” and some offensive production. Purcell recorded 42 points in 81 games, while Pouliot finished with 36 points in 80 games.WHOS ON SECOND?: In a division and conference in which quality depth down the middle is imperative in order to be successful, MacTavish has said second-line centre is a concern for Edmonton. Third overall pick Leon Draisaitl, Mark Arcobello and Anton Lander competed for the job during training camp and preseason, but MacTavish noted the position (has) the most question marks. The onus is going to be on (the) current group of players to show an ability to be competitive for a playoff position. The only is going to be on Arcobello, (Lander) and (Draisaitl) to show theyre ready to play. Nick Pope England Jersey . Its the second of three meetings between these teams this season. At this point the issue is trying to define what cases would be subject to challenges and how the process would work. Because of that, GMs sounded optimistic something would be agreed on, but there was no certainty about whether it would start next season or in 2015-16. "It would be related to a coachs challenge and so instead of jumping right into it, maybe everybody understands when the coaches are going to challenge," Jim Rutherford of the Pittsburgh Penguins said. "So maybe just try it internally for a year. These are real tough changes so you want to get it right." Coachs challenges and the possibility of expanded video review dominated Wednesdays meeting several blocks from Madison Square Garden on the day of Game 4 of the Cup final. One thing that seemed clear was that goaltender interference would not be part of any such changes because theres so much room for interpretation. "I think Commissioner (Gary) Bettman says it best: You want certainty, you want black-and-white where we can say, This is it and, This is not it," Don Maloney of the Phoenix Coyotes said. "Goals going over the line, thats certainty, black-and-white. When you start talking about goalie interference for example, now you start talking about judgment calls. ... Thats when it gets grey." What coaches might be able to challenge includes goals scored on plays that shouldve been offside, the puck hitting the protective netting, the wrong player getting penalized and the puck going over the glass for a penalty. Rutherford stressed that coachs challenges wont be there next season, while Maloney said he wasnt quite sure if it was too late for that possibility. That just added to the lack of clarity ouut of Wednesdays meeting.dddddddddddd Discussions also centred on cracking down on embellishment, and changing the draft lottery for 2015-16 and beyond to be more like the NBAs that allows the first three picks to be attainable. Any draft-lottery changes would not go into effect until 2016, leaving the much-anticipated Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel 2015 event subject to the same system there is now. GMs gave their approval on those competition committee recommendations, including allowing a more liberal definition of kicked-in goals, expanding the trapezoid, doing a dry scrape of the ice and changing ends before overtime, and making some faceoff changes. Consensus wasnt so clear on expanded video review out of Torontos situation room or coachs challenges. One problem is the possibility of delaying games, which Major League Baseball is dealing with in its first season with replay beyond home runs. "We dont want games to be 3 hours long, 3 1/2 hours long," Maloney said. "I find myself going to football games with the stoppages there, I really cant stand it." One thing GMs did seem to agree on is the desire to have more correct calls. "Thats all were concerned about: making sure we get it right," Dale Tallon of the Florida Panthers said. "And then if we do further reviews, weve got to make sure that when we do the reviews, its black and white. Theres still a lot of grey areas in all of this stuff." The discussion will continue. The NHLs board of governors convenes later in June and must approve any changes along with the NHLPA executive committee. "Were on the right track. We just have to make sure what were doing is giving us the results we expect," Maloney said. "The coachs challenge, expanding video replay — those are the big topics right now and were still searching for ways to help the game, not hurt it." ' ' '
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Athletics manager Bob Melvin is already starting to run out of superlatives to describe Scott Kazmir. The right-hander has been so effective in his first season with Oakland that Melvin might need to break out a thesaurus when talking about the veteran pitcher. Kazmir pitched seven innings to win his fourth straight start, Yoenis Cespedes hit his 14th home run and the As beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Thursday night. "Its a broken record talking about him because were seeing basically the same game out of him," Melvin said. "I had heard last year maybe this is a 100-pitch guy top, six innings maybe. Hes been anything but. Hes been absolutely terrific." Kazmir (9-2) went into the game with the second-lowest ERA among qualifiers in the AL and extended his streak to 18 1-3 innings without allowing an earned run before Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run home run in the sixth. He struck out eight and didnt walk a batter. Over his past five starts, Oaklands right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA. "Probably one of the best (games) I felt this year, for sure," said Kazmir, who has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last five starts. "I was able to get ahead most of the time with my fastball and expand the strike zone with my breaking balls and my changeup. Didnt really use too many breaking balls. Just relied mainly on fastball location." Stephen Vogt had two hits and two RBIs, Jed Lowrie scored twice and John Jaso singled in an insurance run in the seventh to move the As a season-high 17 games over .500. Its the best record in the majors and continued Oaklands best start since 1990. Cespedes had not homered against the Red Sox until his two-out, solo shot off Jake Peavy in the third. Boston had played five straight one-run games heading into the series opener with Oakland. This one was tight as well. The As led 3-0 after Vogts single scored Lowrie in the fourth. Kazmir, who hasnt lost since May 23, took a shutout into the sixth that Pedroia ended with a two-out home run. It was the only mistake Kazmir made. "We faced a tough pitcher," Pedroia said. "To be honest, our at bats werent that bad. We have to find a way to have a big inning and get some momentum." Luke Gregerson pitched the eighth and Dan Otero worked the ninth for his first career save. Peavy (1-5) had a second straight strong outing but remained winless over his past 10 starts. Peavy allowed five hits over 6 1-3 innings, retired eight of the final nine batters he faced and struck out four with three walks. It wasnt enough to prevent the Red Sox from ending their three-game winning streak. Vogt hit an RBI groundout off Peavy in the second and singled in another run in the fourth. Lowrie, who walked and doubled, scored both times. Cespedes homered with two outs in the third. The Cuban slugger is batting .343 with four home runs and 12 RBIs through 17 games in June. Cespedes has driven in 49 runs already this season and could soon join teammates Brandon Moss (55) and Josh Donaldson (52) in the 50-RBI club. "When you look at the runs that weve put up this year, a lot of it has to do with those guys in the middle of the order," Melvin said. "Its pretty amazing." "It is exciting that our Canadian athletes are starting to arrive at the Games Village," said Chantal Petitclerc, Canadas Chef de Mission.OTTAWA -- With the Sochi Winter Olympics fast approaching, overseers of Canadas elite athletes are hoping to avoid a post-podium national embarrassment. In an effort to catch cheaters, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport launched an anonymous snitch line Tuesday where athletes and others connected to sport can report allegations of doping. The announcement comes on the heels of last weeks revelations by Victoria cyclist Ryder Hesjedal, who admitted to doping more than a decade ago. Canadians want to be reassured that every effort is being made to prevent an embarrassing spectacle in Sochi, centre president and CEO Paul Melia told a news conference in Ottawa. Melia cited the bitter memory of the moment Jamaican-born sprinter Ben Johnson was stripped of his Olympic gold medal after being disqualified for doping at the 1988 Summer Games. "No one wants to see a Canadian athlete receive a medal on Friday only to see it taken away on Saturday," he said. "We lived that once. We dont want to live it again." To aid in the anti-doping effort, the federal government and the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic committees are contributing a combined $1 million toward the fight against illegal performance enhancements. The money will help boost testing of athletes in the four months prior to the Sochi Olympics, say organizers. It will also strengthen the investigative capacity oof Canadas anti-doping program, said Bal Gosal, Canadas minister of state for sport.dddddddddddd The announcement also comes in advance of an international anti-doping conference being held next week in South Africa, where a new code of standards is expected to be adopted by sports organizations and government around the world. A "Report Doping Hotline" (1-800-710-CCES) has been set up to encourage anyone with knowledge of doping in amateur sport to come forward. Its just one more step toward more fairness in sports, says Canadian Olympic Committee president Marcel Aubut, who acknowledged Tuesday that his committee has done little until now to address the problem. "Fairness, clean play and integrity need to become prerequisites in international Competition," he said. "Competing against the worlds best in an equitable manner is what sport is all about." Its the first time the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and the Canadian Olympic Committee have formally collaborated to tackle an issue. Aubut said only became concerned about high-profile doping cases when he saw media coverage about it while waiting for a plane back home after travelling to Sochi in advance of the Games. Thats when he came to the realization that Canada is vulnerable to a doping scandal of its own, said Aubut. "I read about this, and it shocked me," he said. ' ' '
TORONTO – Aaron Sanchez has arrived. Its the ultimate future-meets-now moment for a franchise at a crossroads. The Blue Jays are hoping a guy who the club expects to be at the centre of successful seasons down the road can contribute to the playoff push of the present. Sanchez will do so out of the bullpen, at least at the beginning, because the Jays wish to manage his innings. Manager John Gibbons will use Sanchez in high-leverage situations, although hed like to allow Sanchez to get his feet wet with nobody on base. His first appearance likely will be at the start of an inning. “Hes here to help us, not just here to be here and fill a role and we think he will,” said Gibbons. “You guys all know what kind of arm hes got. Its his first time there, but we plan on using him. Were not going to baby him, but well keep an eye on him.” Sanchez threw about 110 innings last season between Single-A Dunedin and the Arizona Fall League. Hes at 100 1/3 innings so far this year, the bulk of which were with Double-A New Hampshire. Sanchez made six starts for Triple-A Buffalo, but his last two appearances were in relief. He was moved to the bullpen after the All-Star break in anticipation of his promotion to the Blue Jays. With a 20-per cent innings increase planned for this season, Sanchez has about 30 innings to pitch for Toronto. If hes good, Sanchez addresses a need for the Blue Jays: a right-handed arm to help Dustin McGowan bridge the gap to closer Casey Janssen. It would allow general manager Alex Anthopoulos to focus on another area of need, specifically the infield. “Coming out of the ‘pen, I dont think its going to be that hard,” said Sanchez. “Ive done it a couple of times down there and I adapted to it fast my first couple of times. I had the normal soreness, just because we had three days off going from the All-Star break, but after my second outing I bounced back real quick.” Sanchez was the 34th-overall pick (first round) of the 2010 draft, Alex Anthopouloss first as general manager. In a perfect world, regardless of Sanchezs role the remainder of the season, he adapts to the big leagues as well as his fellow first rounder, Marcus Stroman (22nd-overall, 2012). He insisted hes not afraid of the big stage. Hes looking forward to pitching in front of major league crowds. Stadia with three decks wont faze him. “I think Montreal was a big testament to that. You know, pitching in front of a crowd like that, just, you being in a big league atmosphere,” said Sanchez. “I think thats what I was expecting when I came back up.” Sanchez went through a period of control problems at Double-A. He was pulled early from a couple of outings when he hit 30 pitches in a single inning, a limit set by the Blue Jays in order to protect the prized asset. His command returned with some minor tweaks to his delivery. “I dont think it was more of an arm slot change, it was just about being more consistent with the arm slot,” said Sanchez. “There were a couple of mechanical things that would be inconsistent with my arm slot, so thats what we did down there is kind of go back to the foundation. The more and more I repeated the delivery thing, everything else kind of fell into place.” Sanchez doesnt plan to minimize his repertoire while pitching in relief, as some starters will do. His parents arrived in Toronto, from the Southern Calfornia town of Barstow, in time to be at Rogers Centre. His dad was the first person he called. “I called my pops, absolutely,” said Sanchez. “Hes been by my side from day one. I wish he could be there, in person, with me to share that moment because over the phone didnt do any justice.” ROGERS, GOINS REJOIN BLUE JAYS Sanchezs promotion wasnt the only move the ballclub made on Tuesday. Dickey toed the rubber on Saturday afternoon for arguably his most important start since his arrival in Toronto almost two years ago, he wasnt treating the outing differently than any of the other 64 starts hed made in a Blue Jays uniform. "Its all the same preparation. Its all the same attempts at execution. None of it changes," said Dickey. "I think what happens is it makes it exciting for fans when the media can build it up to be whatever they think it is but for us, as competitors in the middle of it, its a game were trying to win." The Blue Jays entered Saturdays middle game with the Rays coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss on Friday night, a defeat which dropped the club four-and-a-half games behind Kansas City and Seattle for the American Leagues second wild card spot, needing a bounce back win. The margin for error is slim. To get to 89 wins, the pace at which the Royals and Mariners are playing, Toronto had to go 13-3 in its final 16 games. The players dont need calculators to do the math. But Dickey insisted hes not much for the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division at this time of year. "I think thats your job," said Dickey. "I think thats the job of the media is to create a buzz, to create drama. I mean, thats part of the beauty of the media but if youre talking about the actual player and what happens inside the culture of the clubhouse its a game that you want to win, just like you would any other game." Dickeys enjoyed a strong second half of the season. But outside of the win-loss statistic, hes not been appreciably better than in the first half. This has been a good year for the knuckleballer, although he doesnt seem to get much credit for it. Perhaps thats because hell always be linked to the players the Jays traded to the Mets to acquire him, although Travis dArnaud and Noah Syndergaard still are working to establish themselves as every day, big league players. Perhaps its because we got caught in the trap of believing that Dickey would move into the American League East and be Cy Young-calibre dominant like he was in New York in 2012. As was the case in the second half of 2013, Dickeys walk rate and home runs against rate are down from the first half. Prior to the All-Star Break, Dickey issued free passes to 9.2 per cent of hitters he faced, a numbber thats dropped to 5.dddddddddddd9 per cent post-Break. In the first half, he allowed a home run to one of approximately every 34 hitters; in the second half, one of approximately every 38 batters has taken him deep. Saturday marked Dickeys 33rd start at Rogers Centre. Hes got an understanding of how best to limit the damage in his home stadium, a park which plays much differently than New Yorks Citi Field, his Cy Young-winning stomping grounds "I think I figured out after about two-thirds of the season last year what the adjustments needed to be for me in order to (succeed)," said Dickey. "I cant walk guys and I need to try to minimize the long ball. Those two things for me in this park, I can get away with that in other parks it seems because I dont have to worry so much about the long ball. The ball just doesnt carry as much as it does here. I do give up some fly balls because Im a knuckleball pitcher." The key is to keep hitters off-balance with heavily varied velocities. Dickey will throw a hard knuckleball in the high-70s miles per hour. Hell mix in knuckleballs on the low end in the mid-60s, something of an Eephus pitch. Hes also worked to keep the knuckleball down in the zone, especially against power hitters. "When I have count Ive gone lower in the zone whereas traditionally Ive pitched up in the zone to try to get strikeouts and whatnot," said Dickey. "Ive made an adjustment to try to work down in the zone a lot more consistently. Ive tried to keep guys off the base paths as much as possible via walk. All those things together I think have helped. A lot of it has to do with trying to throw good knuckleballs down in the zone." Dickey turns 40 on October 29. Ideally, hed like to spend a birthday before he retires in the middle of a World Series. Hes not focused on the big picture. Not at this time of year. Its the old, boring cliché because its true: one day, one game, at a time. "You are where you are," said Dickey. "If you win, great, youve prepared and tried to execute things in batting practice and in the bullpen sessions to try to get you to the best place to win, just like you would any other game. If you dont win then youve got another game tomorrow and youve got to try to win it. Its relentless. We dont have time to get caught up in the pressure of it all." ' ' '
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Doug Marrone probably didnt envision this when he walked away from the Buffalo Bills last month. After interviewing for at least three NFL head coaching jobs, Marrone landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as assistant head coach and offensive line coach Tuesday. He interviewed with the New York Jets, the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons, and also was considered in the mix in Denver, but didnt get a single offer — not as head coach or offensive co-ordinator.So he ended up in Jacksonville, where hes returning to his roots as an O-line coach. Its a great opportunity, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. Had a great visit with him. Its been a process that we tried to evaluate every piece that we can. We wanted to uncover every stone, lift it and check it all out, and I think its been a really good process.Marrone replaces George Yarno, who left the team last June to begin cancer treatment. Assistant Luke Butkus served as the interim line coach this season. With two rookies and two second-year players starting on the line, the Jaguars gave up a franchise-record 71 sacks. Two days after the season ended, Bradley said he expected Yarno to return in 2015.Clearly, something changed.Bradley interviewed Marrone last week. The Jaguars, who are coaching the South team at the Senior Bowl this week, still need to hire an offensive co-ordinator.Bradley met with six candidates for the job, which opened when Jedd Fisch was fired after the season. Oakland offensive co-ordinator Greg Olson and former Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase appear to be finalists for the opening. No major decisions have been made yet, Bradley said. Were still going through that, the process with that, but hopefully itll come together soon. The Jaguars will sell Marrones hiring as a home run, being able to get someone with his experience to help steer a young offence.Just about everyone else will see it as Marrone making a questionable choice to leave Buffalo.Co-Bills owner Terry Pegula said he was shocked, by Marrones abrupt departure on New Years Eve. Safety Aaron Williams blasted Marrone in a tweet, posting Lost all respect!!Running back Fred Jackson referred to Rex Ryan as an upgrade at coach. And Ryan said during his introductory news conference that the Bills deserve to have a loyal coach — a clear shot at Marrone.Marrone stepped down after leading the Bills to a 9-7 record. It was the teams first winning season since 2004.An opt-out clause in Marrones contract was triggered when Pegula and his wife, Kim, bought the team in October. The club was sold after Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson died in March.Marrone went 15-17 in Buffalo. He was hired after four seasons at Syracuse, where he helped revive his alma maters struggling program.Marrone spent seven seasons in the NFL (2002-08) before becoming a college head coach. He served as offensive co-ordinator for New Orleans (2006-08), and was offensive line coach for the New York Jets for four seasons before that. What he brings to the table is experience, Bradley said. Hes had a great background with the offensive line. Hes a developmental coach and hes proven that over the years that he coached the offensive line with things that he did when he was in New Orleans, and just the impact hes had even in Buffalo and Syracuse. I think thats what we need with our offensive line.___AP Sports Writer John Wawrow in Buffalo, New York, contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLAuthentic Wholesale Nike Shoes . Jose Bautista hit his second home run of the spring. Here are a handful of tidbits from around camp: Hutchison impressive The Blue Jays are being cautious when talking about their young arms but internally, excitement is building over the way Drew Hutchison is looking and performing this spring. The ratio in the CFL is a truly unique - and sometimes headache-inducing - model of proportional roster shuffling, and sometimes, especially in times of widespread injury, it hamstrings head coaches and forces them to juggle their lineups. With Canadian offensive linemen Steve Morley, Marc Parenteau, and Paul Swiston, along with American imports Shannon Boatman and Andre Douglas all out due to injury, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will start three imports on the offensive front against the B.C. Lions. "Its a little bit peculiar, but you know what, its not completely unheard of," said seven-year veteran tackle Glenn January, whose return from a one-week ankle ailment is a welcome reprieve. "I know that the year before I got to Toronto, they did it. I know that Edmonton has done it this year. Theyve played American guards in Montreal. So if the injury bug starts to bite you, youre going to have to make some moves." Because of that bug, the club is now forced to start three Canadian receivers - namely Akeem Foster, Rory Kohlert, and Jade Etienne - or line up Canadians Carl Vony at running back or Michel-Pierre Pontbriand at fullback. On the depth chart, Terrence Edwards is listed as a backup behind Etienne. "Right now, were pretty devastated by injury. Weve got a lot of guys who are a couple games away from coming back," added January. "Hopefully, we can get Steve Morley back on the field here soon, but you kind of have to play the hand youre dealt and right now, thats what were looking at. Youve got a couple of good, young, talented Americans that have come in here and picked up the game fairly quickly. So itll be interesting to see if were able to go out there and establish the line of scrimmage like we hope we are going to be able to." The team signed American offensive tackles Dan Knapp and Jarvis Jones and started them last week following just two days of practice. This week, Jones moves from right to left tackle, while Knapp moves inside to right guard. "Weve struggled on the offensive line this year," said head coach Tim Burke. "Were continually trying to upgrade and I think that upgrades us both in the run game and in the pass protection part of the game. We were happy with the way the two new guys played last week, and then obviously Glenn (January) is a stalwart journeyman kind of guy." On the defensive side of the ball, the team has elected to start veteran corner Jovon Johnson at safety for the struggling Cauchy Muamba again, forcing the team to juggle the lineup to appease the league-mandated ratio.dddddddddddd "By putting Jovon Johnson at safety, a position that was played by a Canadian (Cauchy Muamba) before, you need to put one more Canadian somewhere else," said Pierre-Luc Labbe, who makes his first official start of the season this week. "So Im the lucky one who goes to middle linebacker and theyll put Henoc (Muamba) at (weak side linebacker)." "I played a lot last week," added the Quebec-native Labbe. "It was already planned like this, to put me in on first down most of the time, and on second and short, too. Ive been lucky enough to get a lot of playing time last week." Labbe may prove to be a welcome veteran presence on one of the youngest units in the league. "Im the oldest player on defence here at 29," added Labbe. "That is what coach (Casey) Creehan has been focusing on this week; we had a lot of positives in the last game, even if we lost in overtime, I think the first four quarters were solid. We had chances to just finish and close that game and get away with a win, and we just didnt capitalize. So I think we lost that game more than they won it." Notes: Linebacker/defensive back Johnny Sears, who has been on the nine-game injured list with a foot ailment "should be ready next week" according to Burke. Sears lined up at strong side linebacker and halfback in practice this week... Slotback Cory Watson has been kept out of the lineup with a hamstring injury. Burke says "I think hell be ready next week as well."... Running back Chad Simpson (foot) saw doctors again this week, but his participation in practice has been wildly inconsistent... O-lineman Andre Douglas, who remains on the nine-game with a leg injury, practiced fully this week. There is no timetable for his return... O-linemen Marc Parenteau (neck) and Shannon Boatman (multiple injuries) have been placed on the nine-game injured list... Canadian O-lineman Tyson Pencer, who made his first two professional starts in the back-to-backs against Edmonton, will be a likely scratch this week. Burke said he is "still not ready for prime time." When asked if the 2012 third-overall draft pick should be ready by now, Burke simply answered, "yes." ' ' '

The muted game at the National Stadium in Lisbon did little to brighten the hopes of the two European teams ahead of the tournament in Brazil that begins June 12. The under-strength Portuguese lacked a spark that could have translated their sporadic forward moves into goals. As well as Real Madrid star Ronaldo, who is recuperating from a series of leg injuries and sore muscles, Portugal felt the absence of playmaker Joao Moutinho in midfield and Pepe in the central defence. Greece, though initially fielding its strongest team, looked ordinary and rarely got out of first gear. "One situation we have to be prepared for is not having our regular players available," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "Wee paid the price of our lack of effectiveness in attack.dddddddddddd" Portugal will start the World Cup in Group G with Germany, Ghana and the United States. Greece is in Group C with Colombia, Japan and Ivory Coast. With Nani busy on the right flank as the Manchester United player tried to make his mark after an injury-hit league season, Portugals best chances came in the first 10 minutes as Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis tipped over a Bruno Alves header and dived low to his right to deny Ricardo Costa. A series of second-half substitutions sapped the games fluency. The Portuguese dominated possession but couldnt break down the solid Greek defence. Hugo Almeida found Nani unmarked on the right of the Greek penalty area in the 67th but the winger took too long to set up his shot. In the final minutes, Giorgos Karagounis slammed a close-range shot against goalkeeper Betos legs. ' ' '
Each week, TSN.ca takes a look at the top available players in fantasy football ahead of the weekly waiver deadline. Quarterbacks Eli Manning, New York Giants (at Jacksonville) Last Week: 29/40, 339 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT Manning had one of his better games of the season against the Cowboys in Week 12; throwing three touchdowns for just the third time in 2014. But it’s his remaining schedule that makes Manning an attractive wire pick up, and possibly a plug-and-play QB1. The Giants travel to play the Jaguars and Titans before returning to the Meadowlands to host the Redskins over the next three weeks. Manning will be a QB1 option in each of those games, and remains available in more than 60 per cent of leagues. Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings (vs. Carolina) Last Week: 21/37, 210 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT; 32 rush yards Bridgewater’s first multi-touchdown game put him on the fantasy radar for the first time. While the rookie remains far from a reliable option, his value could continue rise with games against the Panthers and Jets looming. The Louisville product remains off the QB1 radar, but is worth a flier in two QB leagues. Running Backs C.J. Anderson, Denver Broncos (at Kansas City) Last Week: 167 yards, 1 TD; four catches (four targets), 28 yards Anderson has been worth a pick up – and has been picked in over 50 per cent of leagues – for a couple of weeks now. Against the Dolphins, Anderson put together the best day on the ground of his career. He has taken full advantage of his opportunity thanks to the injuries to Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman. Anderson will likely have trouble finding paydirt against the stingy Chiefs run defence, but should still be a safe RB2 play. Latavius Murray, Oakland Raiders (at St. Louis) Last Week: 112 yards, 2 TDs Murray appeared on the waiver wire last week as a flier, now after his short but impressive performance against the Chiefs in Week 12, he’s a legitimate RB2. Murray exited the Raiders win over the Chiefs after just four carries due to a concussion but, as long as he clears protocol, will be worth a start against the Rams. Isaiah Crowell, Cleveland Browns (at Buffalo) Last Week: 88 yards, 2 TDs The Browns backfield is less of a mystery this week than last with Ben Tate out of mix, but Crowell still split carries with Terrance West against the Falcons. Crowell made the most of carries - outgaining West despite two less touches - but remains an unreliable fantasy start. Crowell faces a tough matchup against the Bills this week, but his use could go a long way in determining his value. He’s a low-end RB2 option for Week 13. LeGarrette Blount, New England Patriots (at Green Bay) Last Week: 78 yards, 2 TDs Last week, I prefaced my comments on breakout back Jonas Gray with “for years, the Patriots have frustrated fantasy owners with their unpredictable running back rotation.” That unpredictable rotation returned again on Sunday as Gray was benched for being late for practice and Blount – signed earlier in the week – led the Patriots rushing attack. Picking the man to start in the Patriots backfield is a dart throw. Shane Vereen holds value as a pass-catching back, but outside of that Blount and Gray are no more than RB3s. Blount could be worth a stash though, in case he emerges as the leader again against the Packers. Wide Receiver Charles Johnson, Minnesota Vikings (vs. Carolina) Last Week: Three catches (11 targets), 52 yards, 1 TD Johnson hauled in just three of his 11 targets against the Packers, but much of that was Bridgewater’s inaccuracy. Johnson is emerging as Bridgewater’s favourite target with 87 yards last week and another 52 in Week 12. Johnson will be on the WR3/ FLEX radar this week against the Panthers leaky pass defence. Jarvis Landry, Miami Dolphins (at New York Jets) Last Week: Seven catches (10 targets), 50 yards, 2 TDs Landry had a strong day working in the slot against the Broncos in Week 12 and now has at least one touchdown in two straight games. Landry is starting to appear on the WR2 radar in PPR leagues, he has 34 catches in the past four weeks. Landry will likely continue his recent success this week against the Jets porous defence. Tight End Tim Wright, New England Patriots (at Green Bay) Last Week: Five catches (six targets), 36 yards, 2 TDs Wright has hauled in a at least one touchdown catch in each of his last two games and, according to ESPN, played a season-high 60 snaps on Sunday against the Lions. With defences fixated on Rob Gronkowski, Wright has found open space in the redzone and will likely continue to see opportunities in the Patriots high-scoring offence. At a weak position, Wright is on the TE1 radar in what will likely be a shootout in Green Bay. OAKLAND, Calif. -- A warm day helped Brandon Moss reach another milestone and it helped Jeff Samardzija enjoy even more run support. Moss hit a grand slam and the Oakland Athletics gave Samardzija more run support than he has had all season in a 13-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday. "I didnt realize it went over the fence," Moss said. "I thought it was going to be a sacrifice fly. Then I saw it bounce around and was shocked. Thats not a home run at night. Being a day game, the ball carries better." Jed Lowrie had three hits and drove in a run for the As, who have the best record (63-38) in baseball and are a season-best 25 games over .500. Chris Carter hit a home run for the Astros, who fell to 2-4 since the All-Star break. Samardzija (2-1) gave up a leadoff single to Jose Altuve and then retired 10 straight before Carters 20th home run put Houston on the board. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. He retired 12 of 13 following Carters blast. Carter was the lone Astro to get past second base against Samardzija, who received a combined 13 runs of support over his final six starts with the Cubs. "I was just trying to get quick innings and not keep the defence out there very long," Samardzija said. "I wanted to keep them in hitting rhythm. When you get a lead like that, you just take a deep breath." Samardzija was 2-7 with the Cubs despite a 2.83 ERA. He entered with the third-lowest run support in the majors at 3.05 runs per outing. "Im having a lot of fun playing here," Samardzija said. "I just attacked the zone and threw a lot of fastballs." Scott Feldman (4-8) lost his straight start, lasting 5 1-3 innings. He allowed six runs and nine hits, walking five and striking out four. "He battled but at the same time they did a tremendous job of hitting with runners in scoring position," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "Thats pretty much what was the difference in the ballgame." Feldman allowed at least six runs for just the third time this season but for the second time in three starts. He has allowed 16 runs and 27 hits over his last 17 2-3 innings. "It was a battle for him all day," Porter said. "Early in the game he really had his breaking ball working, and they started laying off and made him come back into the zone." The As were ahead 4-1 entering the sixth inning when Moss hit his third grand slam of the season. "You want to cash them in with runners on base," Moss said. "It was a situation where the guy had to make a good pitch and I hit it. I had the bases loaded in the at-bat before and ended up hitting a weak grounder to first." Stephen Vogt added a three-run double in the eighth. Josh Reddick, who had two doubles, added a sacrifice fly. Donaldson and Derek Norris, who had three hits, each drove in runs in the third. Abreu, who leads the majors in homers and RBIs, struck out with two runners on base to end the eighth. Earlier, the Cuban first baseman made the play of the day. Abreu fielded Lonnie Chisenhalls grounder in the sixth and, unable to get the ball out of his mitt, flipped the glove about 10 feet to pitcher Scott Carroll covering the bag for the out. Masterson (1-1) held the ALs highest-scoring offence in check, allowing four hits and striking out six in his seventh start of the season. The right-hander won for the first time since last Aug. 21. Cody Allen struck out Abreu in the eighth. John Axford pitched the ninth for his ninth save, sending Chicago to its fourth straight loss. NASHVILLE -- Facing an early deficit, Nashville turned the game around with its power play. Patric Hornqvist scored with the man-advantage at 13:56 of the third period to lift the Predators to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night. Matt Cullen and Roman Josi also scored power-play goals to help Nashville snap a three-game losing streak. The three man-advantage goals were a season high for the Predators. Nashville entered Thursday with the NHLs seventh-best power play. "The power play was really huge, but our 5-on-5 play was strong," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We gave up seven shots in the last two periods and that includes a couple of power plays that they had." Martin St. Louis had both goals for the Lightning, losers of three of their last four. With time winding down in the final period, Hornqvist collected the rebound of Mike Fishers shot and slipped it by Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop. "It hit the heel of my stick, and then I dont know if I got a whack on it on the rebound, too," Hornqvist said. "Its nice to see that it finally went in. Thats how I have to play every single night to be effective." St. Louis opened the scoring at 5:26 of the first period. Ondrej Palat carried the puck from the left boards into the slot, where he sent a backhand off the left post. St. Louis was parked in front of the Nashville goal to tap home the rebound. Less than four minutes later, St. Louis struck again. With the Lightning on a power play, St. Louis wrist shot from the right faceoff dot hit Nashville goaltender Carter Hutton in the chest, fell to the ice, and trickled across the goal line. Hutton is 7-2-2 in his last 11 games. Since scoring a career-best four times in Tampa Bays Jan. 18 game against San Jose, St. Louis had not scored a goal, a stretch of nine games. He also was pointless in five games for Team Canada in their gold medal-winning performance at the Sochi Olympic Games. "Our 5-on-5 play was horrendous," St. Louis said. "Our battle level was very low. Youve got to grind it out in this league, and we didnt do that." After getting nine shots on goal in the first, Tampa Bay managed just four in the second and three in the third. "It was disgracefully embarrassing, thats what that game was," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "Two periods, really, really disappointed. Seven shots in the last two periods?" Cullen struck at 12:05 of the second. Ryan Ellis skated the puck into the right circle, where he faked a shot and found Cullen at the back door for an easy tap-in. Josi tied the game 1:11 later on another power-play goal when the Swiss Olympian ripped a slap shot from the left faceoff dot over Bishops left shoulder. "The first period, we didnt manage the puck that well," Josi said. "We actually didnt play a bad period in the first, but they got up 2-0. After that, we just worked their defence and our forwards did a great job down low." NOTES: Palat has points in three-straight games. ... SAKHIR, Bahrain -- Mercedes locked out the front row for the Bahrain Grand Prix as Nico Rosberg claimed pole position on Saturday, qualifying ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Rosbergs time of 1 minute, 33.185 seconds at the Bahrain International Circuit was a quarter of a second faster than Hamilton, who had to abandon his final flying lap after running wide at the first corner. It was Mercedes third straight pole to start the Formula One season but the first for Rosberg, who equaled his father Keke with five career poles. Rosberg leads the championship on 43 points, 18 ahead of Hamilton. "It has just worked well through the weekend, finding my way, making progress and getting through some issues," Rosberg said. "I have good memories of this track, winning the GP2 championship and starting my first race in F1. I enjoy coming here and again today its suited me." Rosberg and Hamilton have a win each from the opening two races of the season and Mercedes also dominated the three practice sessions leading into qualifying, both in day and night conditions, with Sundays race to be held at night for the first time. The only surprise was Rosberg taking pole ahead of Hamilton, who usually thrives in the one-lap format. "I locked up in the last lap but generally I am happy for the team," Hamilton said. "Nico did a great job and naturally Im happy my teammate is there and not someone else." Defending four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel did not even make the final session of qualifying and will start from 10th on the grid -- promoted one spot as his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified third, gets a 10-place grid penalty from the previous race in Malaysia. Vettel paid the price for a session-ending spin in pre-qualifying practice which prevented him from getting valuable data on how to set up the car on the soft-tire, low-fuel setting. He also complained of a downshifting problem. "The final run for some reason was a bit more difficult, the rears were locking up," Vettel said. "We had been playing around with it for quite a while, we are still not where we want to be but I dont want to blame it on that. There was a little bit more in the car which I couldnt get to, so I am not happy with today." Williams driver Valtteri Bottas and Force Indias Sergio Perez qualified fourth and fifth respectively and, with the one-place promotion, both equaled their best career starting positions. Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen qualified sixth, four places ahead of Fernando Alonso, to take the qualifying honours over his teammate for the first time this season in what is expected to a year-long fight between the two former world champions. Alonso said the car was down on power in the final part of qualifying, though he felt the teams starting grid positions of fifth and ninth were "more or less what we expected to be honest." "Q2 we were down a little bit and Q3 we lost more," Alonso said. "Still, we didnt miss out on the possibility of pole position because we are not in that kind of position. Its just a couple of places that hopefully tomorrow we can recover." McLarens Jenson Button, contesting his 250th grand prix, qualified in seventh and his teammate Kevin Magnussen was ninth, separated by Felipe Massa of Williams. Aside from Vettels early elimination, the main surprise of Q2 was Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg qualifying in 12th, having been fastest of all drivers in Q1 and showing strong pace during the practice sessions. Saubers Adrian Sutil was hit with a five-place grid penalty for impeding Lotus Romain Grosjean in the first session of qualifying, sending him to the very back of the grid. ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have added another proven veteran to their rebuilding defence, signing free-agent cornerback Carlos Rogers to a one-year contract on Monday. Rogers, 32, joins former San Francisco 49ers secondary mate Tarell Brown on Oaklands overhauled defence. The Raiders have also brought in defensive linemen Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley and Antonio Smith. All of those other players are at least 29 years old and have played in the Super Bowl in their careers as general manager Reggie McKenzie is counting on that experience to help end an 11-year playoff drought. "The Raiders have been one of the teams that have been more active in the off-season, trying to turn things around," Rogers said. "I see where this team is going and it wasnt hard to come here and finalize the deal." Oakland is coming off back-to-back four-win seasons and hasnt had a winning record since winning the 2002 AFC championship. After showing some promise early in the season, the Raiders defence wilted late and allowed the second-most points per game (28.3) in franchise history. Oakland has had two of the three highest scoring seasons allowed in coach Dennis Allens first two years with the franchise. That led to the big changes on defence this off-season. Rogers played an NFL-high 1,259 snaps as a slot cornerback in his three years in San Francisco, according to Pro Football Focus. He will likely play that role again in Oakland on the nickel defence and will also compete with last years first-round pick D.J. Hayden for a starting spot outside across from Brown. "We were a big part of the puzzle that turned San Franciscos defence around, so hopefully we can translate that over here and be even better," Rogers said. Rogers was let go earlier this off-season by the Niners in a cost-saving move. He said he holds no ill will to his former team but is looking forward to playing San Francisco this upcoming season. Rogers has started 116 games over nine seasons with Washington and San Francisco. He has 17 career interceptions and 109 passes defenced. His best year statistically came in his first season in San Francisco in 2011 when he had six interceptions and was picked for the Pro Bowl and earned second-team All Pro honours. That performance helped lead San Francisco back to the playoffs after eight straight years without a berth. Rogers played in three NFC title games in three seasons with the Niners and also lost the Super Bowl to Baltimore following the 2012 season. "I want to continue to win and I want to continue to be a big part of helping to turn this organization around, like I did in San Francisco and continue to win and try to get to that Super Bowl and win it," Rogers said. TORONTO -- When the pace car began sliding around the Toronto track, IndyCar knew it was in trouble. The Honda Indy Toronto was postponed Saturday after steady rain throughout the afternoon made for hazardous conditions on the 11-turn, 2.81-kilometre track at Exhibition Place. "Im gutted. I just feel so bad for all the fans here in Toronto," said driver James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont. "Its the worst case scenario -- the rain started right as the race was supposed to start, the conditions were just so bad. "Just gutted for these guys. I really hope we can get back tomorrow and mother nature co-operates a bit more and we can put on a show. These fans have been great all week and they definitely deserve it." The race was moved to Sunday morning, with the second half of a planned doubleheader still scheduled for the afternoon. Both races were also shortened from 85 laps to 65. The morning race will feature a rolling start, while the second will be a standing start. Qualifying for the second race will also be determined by current points standings, which puts Helio Castroneves on pole. Driver visibility and a slick street course led to a pair of accidents before Saturdays race ever got started when Ryan Briscoe and Will Power each hit the wall. Even the pace car nearly slid into a corner. "The conditions were tough for sure," said Ryan Hunter-Reay. "I cant speak for the drivers in the back on how visibility was but it was borderline -- marginal even -- for us." Sebastien Bourdais was set to start on pole after qualifying first in the morning session. Bourdais waited under an umbrella through two red flags that twice pulled the cars off the track as IndyCar officials hoped for the weather to clear. It never did. Bourdais, who was to start a race from the pole for the first time since 2007, looked steamed as he left the pits for good. Hell start again in first place Sunday morning. IndyCar president Derrick Walker said race officials waited as long as they could for conditions to improve. "I think it would have been crazy to have started the race today," said Walker. "I mean it doesnt look like a lot of water but when you get out there and look at it, its enough to make a difference. ... "I dont think we did the wrong thing. We waited and waited and part of the indecision ... was really us just going as late as we could before we called it." The race, which was initially shortened from 85 laps to 65 and two hours to 90 minutes to compensate for the delay, was finally called after well over two hours of waiting. The first casualty of the weather was a planned standing start that had to be scrapped in favour of a safer, single-file rolling start. Briscoe then collided with the same turn where he broke his wrist last year. Power, who was supposed to start second, slid into a 180 and damaged his car to trigger another delay. Powers Penke crew hustled to get his car fixed and back on the grid, but the effort was futile in the end when the race was cancelled and soggy fans left the track. IndyCar races can be run in the rain, the last one as recently as June 28 at the doubleheader in Houston. But Walker said sweepers couldnt keep water from collecting on the track at Exhibition Place. Driver and fan safety, in the end, trumped the race. "Racing in the rains great but you cant go and throw everybody in the fence just because the conditions are archaic and I think they were that today," said Walker. Both races Sunday could be just as wet. More rain is in the forecast, but Walker was adamant IndyCar would run at least one race in Toronto. "I think wed probably stay here as long as we possible could to get a race in, for sure," said Walker who added there was a chance it might also happen Monday if necessary. "But I think were going to get it in tomorrow. At least one race tomorrow." Swell Bottle Teal Wood . Noah. Noah Hanifin. "My wife loved it," Bob Hanifin said. "After we named him that, she told me, Hes going to go on to do great things with this name." If youre not familiar with Noah Hanifin, you soon will be. And, yes, it would appear hes on course to do great things, certainly in the hockey arena. This years NHL draft is billed as the Connor McDavid draft. Or Connor McDavid vs. Jack Eichel. McDavid and Eichel have been labeled generational talents, potential NHL franchise centres, the undisputed top two in the Class of 2015. Hanifin, a defenceman, will be hard pressed to displace either of the star centres, but the Boston College freshman goes into this season as a potential elite offensive blueliner who could yet transform the high end of this draft from a dynamic duo to a tremendous trio. "Theres not a huge gap between McDavid or Eichel and Hanifin but there is, to start the season anyway, a gap between those top three and everyone else," said one head scout of an NHL team. "(Hanifin) is at a disadvantage simply because hes a defenceman and the other two guys are centres. But (Hanifin) could be Scott Niedermayer. He skates like him." Hanifin is a shade under 6-foot-3 and weighs 205 pounds. The scouting report says he has world-class wheels, elite offensive skills, can run a power play and use his size effectively to play physically when its required. Hes not quite as big as Nashville Predator Seth Jones, the last prospect, before Hanifin, who went into his NHL draft year billed as the next great American defenceman. Some scouts like Hanifin better than Jones at the same stage of development. Others think the jury is still out on that. Regardless, Hanifin is certainly viewed as being in the same universe as the top defenceman from the 2013 NHL draft, who was ranked No. 1 much of his draft year before going fourth overall to Nashville. TSNs pre-season 2015 NHL draft rankings will be unveiled in a half-hour special (and on www.tsn.ca) Thursday at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt – at precisely the same time as Hanifin, Eichel and others will be playing in the USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game at Buffalos First Niagara Center. There is considerable discussion amongst NHL scouts who should start this season as No. 1 – McDavid or Eichel – but (spoiler alert) theres little doubt whos ranked No. 3 – eight of 10 NHL scouts surveyed by TSN have Hanifin right behind the two star centres. Hanifin played last season for USA Hockeys Under-17 program based out of Ann Arbor, Mich., but in late March was added to the Under-18 national team, where he excelled at the Under-18 World Championships last April, helping to lead Team USA to the gold medal. With one goal and five points, Hanifin was highest-scoring American defenceman. "He took over the tournament as an underage defenceman," said another NHL head scout. Hanifin was a teammate of Eichels at that tournament; Hanifan hasnt played with or against McDavid, though Hanifin did skate this summer with McDavid -- as well as Sam Gagner, John Tavares and other NHLers -- at a skating and skills session in the Toronto area. Hanifin first met McDavid last year at a Boston Bruin game when they were both there as guests of the agent – Bobby Orr – they share. Hanifin is uniquely qualified to size up the Mac (McDavid) or Jack (Eichel) battle, but as one might expect, hes playing it safe, with a fellow American/former teammate who is now a college rival at Boston University and a young Canadian whom he got to know as a friend/training partner this summer. "Well, theyre both tremendous players," Hanifin said. "But I just try to focus on my own game and what I can control." This was supposed to be Hanifins senior year at high school, the season in which he moved up fulltime to the U.S. Under-18 program. But he instead opted to fast track his high school graduation – he took internet courses all summer – so he could go directtly to Boston College, where hes been billed as the youngest player in BC history.dddddddddddd (For the record, Boston College has no definitive word on who is the youngest player to play for the Eagles, but a 17-year old freshman is highly unusual.) "Its always been my goal to play college hockey and Ive always wanted to go to Boston College," Hanifin said. "Its a big jump but Im looking forward to the challenge. Im feeling confident in practice but I know Ill be playing against guys who are a lot older, a lot more mature. So its going to be a challenge but I like challenges. Im looking forward to getting started." Hanifin began his minor hockey career as a forward. But Neil Shea, an NHL scout (now with the Colorado Avalanche) who was Hanifins coach through much of his minor hockey career in the Boston area with the South Shore Kings, moved him to the blueline, and theres been no looking back. Hanifin also excelled at St. Sebastians prep school before going to the U.S. program in Ann Arbor. As a 13-year-old eighth grader, Hanifan made the St. Sebastians varsity high school team, playing against competition as much as five years older. Hanifin grew up in Norwood, Mass., southwest of Boston. He has a younger brother Cole, 12, and younger sister, Lily, 11. His parents – Bob, a Boston court officer, and Tina, who works in human resources with a law firm – both grew up in the city (Boston). Not surprisingly, Noah was raised to be a Bruin fan. "Oh, yeah, my Dad was always a huge Bruin fan," Hanifin said. But the defenceman he most admired growing up was Detroit Red Wing star Nick Lidstrom. Hanifin wore no. 5 in minor hockey and at St. Sebastians as a tribute to Lidstrom. No. 5 wasnt available with the U-17 team so he wore 55. No. 5 is taken at Boston College, so hell wear No. 7, which isnt a coincidence. Hanifin is too young to recall Ray Bourques time with the Bruins but his Dad most certainly imparted some wisdom. "Ive watched a lot of Ray Bourque video because my Dad told me all about him," Hanifin said. "Nick Lidstrom and Ray Bourque, those would be the two defencemen Ive tried to model my game after." Disappointments have been few and far between in Hanifans young hockey career, but he was not happy to not be invited to USA Hockeys national junior team summer evaluation camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., though he wasnt alone on that count. U-17 teammate Zach Werenski, who often was paired on the blueline with Hanifin, was also overlooked. Like Hanifan, Werenski fast-tracked through high school to leave the U.S. program a year early for the University of Michigan. There was speculation the Lake Placid snub was a USA Hockey reaction to the pair bolting early. Players are generally expected to play two seasons - U-17 and U-18 - in the system. Nevertheless, USA Hockey still considers Hanifin, Werenski and, for that matter, Tampa first-rounder draft pick Anthony DeAngelo of the OHLs Sarnia Sting (a third high profile absentee from the Lake Placid camp) as candidates for the U.S. world junior team. "I wasnt that surprised (at not being invited to the summer camp)," Hanifin said. "Im a young guy but Im a competitive kid and I feel like I can contribute. (Not getting invited) motivated me even more." In the meantime, he intends to do whatever he can to work on the areas of the game that need improvement. "Im really focusing on my shot," he said. "Im working on that a lot. Im trying to shoot it harder, be better at the one-timers, get more shots through." Hes also taking advantage of having Bobby Orr as a sounding board and confidante. "The biggest thing Bobby tells me is to not get caught up in everything -- the draft, the attention, the pressure, all that stuff," Hanifan said. "He tells me to embrace it, just enjoy playing, just try to have fun playing the game and focusing on that." So that is what he will do, and it all starts in earnest this week: McDavids third OHL season with the Erie Otters begins on Wednesday; Eichel, Hanifan and the best young American talent playing in the U.S. prospects game in Buffalo on Thursday. ARLINGTON, Texas – By the time the Blue Jays leave town after Sundays game, the Rangers will have seen enough of Anthony Gose. His speed has created runs for Toronto and prevented runs for Texas in this series. "Hes really good," said outfield coach Tim Leiper. "He just covers a lot of ground. Hes into the game. You watch him, too, hes hungry. Hes come up here with something to prove." In Friday nights 2-0 win, the Blue Jays were stifled by Rangers ace Yu Darvish for seven innings. In the eighth, Erik Kratz surprised third baseman Adrian Beltre by laying down a leadoff bunt single. Gose followed with a drag bunt down the first base line, beating out a bang-bang play at the bag. One out later, Gose scored from first on a Melky Cabrera double, tearing around the bases. In Saturday nights 4-2 win, with the game tied 1-1 in the seventh, Gose led off with an opposite field double. He stole third and with one out, scored on a Cabrera chopper to Beltre. Gose was going the moment he saw Cabreras ball wasnt hit hard and Beltre, one of the games best defensive third baseman, didnt attempt a play at the plate. Mark Buehrle was the beneficiary of the run on Saturday but when asked about Goses offence, he quickly changed the subject. "I dont even want to talk about the scoring runs, I want to talk about the defence," said Buehrle. "Hes been out there the last couple of days, balls have been hit and this isnt a knock against Colby (Rasmus) because hes pretty fast but there were some balls hit in the gap and youre like, Damn, thats a double and then all of sudden, here comes Gose catching the ball." Gose has made two standout catches this series, both on Friday night. He robbed Mitch Moreland of extra bases in the left-centerfield gap, crashing into the wall on the run as he hauled in the ball. He went into right-centerfield to take away at least a double, likely a triple, from speedster Leonys Martin. "He made those look somewhat easy but off the bat, you dont think theyre going to get caught," said Leiper. Goses speed is one reason hes an elite defender. "Theres plenty of guys with speed and obviously hes got above average speed for anybody," said Leiper. "It comes down to he gets the jumps. For guys who are slower and they definitely need the footwork to make up for their lack of speed, hes got both." Theres another reason, one his coach appreciates just as much: Gose has impressed Leiper with his interest in pre-game preparation. Its not always noticeable, unseen on TV and likely not a fans focus while watching a game live, but Leiper notices the results pitch by pitch. "Its subtle but, for me, Im so one-dimensional now, Im just focused on what hes doing and how hes moving and where these guys are," said Leiper. "To watch him take charge with the other two outfielders, too, its impressive to watch. Hes got a good feel for the position." Pillar is Goses Platoon Partner Right-handed hitting Kevin Pillar will start in centrefield against left-handed pitchers during Colby Rasmus absence with a hamstring injury. Anthony Gose, a left-handed bat, will start against right-handers. Pillars first big league experience, late last season, was a struggle. He feels better now, knowing his role is defined. "I definitely think, knowing what your role is, whether its platooning or playing everyday, but having some sort of conversation with the manager, and knowing what your role is going to be is comforting," said Pillar. Pillar picked up his first two big league hits of 2014 in Saturday nights victory. Hes 2-for-11 during his brief stint with Toronto. He was off to a great start at Triple-A Buffalo, hitting .305/.344/.461, which included an 18-game hitting streak. The book on Pillar is off-speed, typically breaking sliders, down and away. Hell continue to be pitched that way, especially with two strikes, until he shows he can lay off. "I think its more mental than anything," said Pillar. "Mechanically, its trying to simplify a little bit, letting the ball travel a little deeper before I make a decision to swing. My second at-bat last night, I fouled off a lot of pitches, letting the ball get deep and thats a testament to staying with my approach, letting the ball get a little deeper, allowing myself to see the pitch before I swing. I think last year, part of it was trying to do too much, trying to get hits, not really seeing the ball out of the hand and this year I promised myself I wouldnt try to get hits, I would try to get good pitches to hit, and thats allowed me to lay off pitches down and away." The seventh-ranked Choi, a seven-time winner on the LPGA Tour, birdied three of the last four holes in her bogey-free round to reach 15 under on Atlantis Resorts Ocean Club course. "I think the last three rounds I had a really good swing," Choi said. "I had so many good shots. But I still have to play aggressively tomorrow. So many players have a chance." The South Korean player hit 16 greens in regulation after hitting all 18 in windy conditions Friday. "I had so many solid shots out there." Choi said. "I missed two greens today. Only two, but I hit a putt from the fringe, so obviously I havent chipped the last two rounds. Last two, three weeks I havent practiced much, maybe like seven or 10 days only, and every day its just work out like two hours, and then I went to Dallas for chiropractor just more like take care for my body and then I got great feeling about my swing." Lizette Salas was a stroke back. She also had a bogey-free 66. "Ive been bogey-free for the last two days and Im feeling great on the greens," said Salas, winless on the tour. "A win is always on my mind, and its been a goal of mine since coming close last year in Hawaii." Fighting flu-like symptoms, she birdied three of the first four holes on the back nine. "Once I hit the turn, I was just on it and wanted to make as many birdies as I could." Salas said. "You cant always play perfect and thats the thing about this game. I was trying to play it as best I could comming down the stretch.dddddddddddd" Jessica Korda and Paula Creamer each eagled the 18th to reach 12 under. Korda, the second-round leader, had a 72, and Creamer shot 71. Creamer also holed a sand wedge from 82 yards for an eagle on the par-5 11th, but lost a ball en route to a triple-bogey 8 on No. 15. "Many things happened today, yes," Creamer said. "Thats an understatement. I had a couple bad iron swings out there today. Obviously, the tee shot on the one hole. But I just didnt play well from there. You can hit it in the hazard all day and still make a bogey. There was no need to make a triple. "But overall Im proud of the way I finished with my attitude." Korda had a double bogey on No. 13 after shanking a shot out of bounds. "Im really happy with the way I finished," Korda said. "I hit a lot of good shots today, really a lot of good putts that just didnt fall, so I cant be disappointed with that. I honestly had one bad shot." Third-ranked Stacy Lewis was tied for fourth at 11 under with Amelia Lewis and Jenny Suh. Stacy Lewis had a 68, Amelia Lewis shot 66, and Suh had a 71. "If youre coming from behind, I think its a good spot to be in," Stacy Lewis said. "If youve got the lead and youve got all these people chasing you, I think its a hard position to be in. I actually like where I am and I like that Im going to get out tomorrow a couple groups early and hopefully can make a couple putts early and then kind of put some pressure on the leaders." Michelle Wie and 16-year-old Lydia Ko were in the group at 10 under. Wie followed her second-round 65 with a 72. Ko, making her first start as an LPGA Tour member, had a 71. ' ' '
WATERLOO, Ont. -- Shanshan Feng shot a second round of 6-under 65 Friday to move into a tie with defending champion Hee Young Park at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. Parks second round of 5-under 66 gave her the clubhouse lead at 11 under with several players still on the course at Grey Silo. But Feng caught up with a bogey-free round that included three birdies on the front nine and three on the back. Michelle Wie, who entered the day tied for first with Park, was one stroke behind the leaders at 10 under after shooting 4-under 67 Friday. Anna Nordqvist (64) was in fourth at 9 under, while Tour rookie Xi Yu Lin was at 8 under. Inbee Park, ranked second on the Tour, was at 7 under after shooting a second round of 66, and top-ranked Stacey Lewis was at 4 under after a second straight 69. Jennifer Kirby, from Paris, Ont., (70) and Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., (70) and 16-year-old Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., (71) were the top Canadians at 1 under. Hamiltons Alena Sharp (69) was at even par, while Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., (68) was right on the projected cut line at 1 over. The fleet-of-foot Chris Gayle led the teams victory dance after they defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final in Colombo to claim their first world crown since the 2004 Champions Trophy.Big hitting all-rounder Kieron Pollard - who has played in more T20 games than any other player - was in that side but wont be this time around having been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury. However, we caught up with the Trinidadian to discuss West Indies win four years ago and whether they can launch a repeat in India… Kieron Pollard won the World T20 with West Indies in 2012 What were the secrets to your success in 2012?KP: I dont think there were too many secrets. We struggled through the group stage after losing to Australia and having our game with Ireland rained off, but we just stuck together as a team as we knew we had some really good players. Our batting line-up could cope with every eventuality - we had the power of Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles up top and Marlon Samuels stability at No 3, while down the order you had guys like myself, Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell and Darren Sammy who could clear the ropes.Plus, the bowling department also had two good spinners in Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree as well as the pace of Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul. There was great balance all the way through and we always thought we could chase down or defend any total. Marlon Samuels score a battling 78 for West Indies against Sri Lanka What are you memories of the win over Sri Lanka in the final, where Samuels scored 78 and Sunil Narine took 3-9?KP: Samuels produced one of the greatest knocks you will see in T20 cricket - he dug in for much of his innings after we fell to 14-2 in the sixth over but also deposited the best T20 bowler in the world at the time, Lasith Malinga, into the stands. That gave us real confidence heading into the changing rooms ahead of Sri Lankas innings. We knew we had to play well against their batting line-up which featured Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara but Samuels knock gave us a positive mind-set. Pollard says Sammys captaincy was crucial in West Indies victory Sammys 26 off 15 balls helped as well and I think he led the team really well throughout. He is a good, fun guy who always tried to make everyone happy, relaxed and comfortable - that is a hard thing to do in a major tournament but he did it and was a key reason for us winning.I always knew what Narine was capable of, too, having played with and against him since the age of about 13. If he needed to practise something in the nets I was like his guinea pig - I had to deal with plenty of his world-class deliveries! You had a pretty quiet tournament, if you dont mind me saying, but you came up trumps in the semi-final win over Australia...KP: I managed to hit three sixes in a row off Xavier Doherty - though it wasnt my best as I had hit four in a row in a T20 match in the Caribbean! Seriously, though, it was nice to make that contribution as you want to bring out your best performances in the biggest games. I am not the greatest bowler in the world - I dont have any pace, I dont swing it and I dont seam it - but I always back myself in any situation.dddddddddddd Kieron Pollard I scored 38 from 15 balls and my partnership with Gayle helped us to a pretty formidable total of 205, before I took the crucial wicket of George Bailey with one of my dibbly-dobbers when he was on 63.I am not the greatest bowler in the world - I dont have any pace, I dont swing it and I dont seam it - but I always back myself in any situation. I got Pat Cummins next ball before Mitchell Starc denied me a hat-trick, though I wasnt thinking too much about that. Kieron Pollard looks back on Chris Gayle’s sensational knock against Australia in 2009. West Indies have had their troubles in Test and ODI cricket recently but sit third in the ICC T20 rankings. Are you confident the side can win another World T20?KP: Sometimes when you go in as favourites and everyone talks about you having the best balanced team or the best big hitters you can get distracted.West Indians just try to play every game on its merits - focus on flair, enjoy themselves, play consistent cricket and give the fans something to cheer. When you think about things too much you put pressure on yourself but when you are relaxed the situations become a lot easier - the key is to keep calm, talk nonsense on the side and then take care of the game your way. If we do that, we have a chance. Pollard has played more T20s than any other player Finally, you will miss the World T20 through injury meaning, for the time being, you are stranded on just the 299 T20 games! I am devastated to miss the tournament but these things happen in sport so you have to accept them. The fact Ive played more T20s than anyone else is no consolation but I do see that stat as a real achievement. Some people dont rate T20 cricket but it has always been cricket as far as I am concerned - its bat versus ball and the only difference is the length of the game. Hopefully Ive got many more matches to come.Watch West Indies play England in their opening World T20 games from 1.30pm, Wednesday, Sky Sports 2. NEW YORK -- Alfredo Simon making his first start in more than two years. Manny Parra stepping into the closers spot. Turns out, all the Cincinnati Reds needed for a win in New York was a little role reversal. Simon pitched seven impressive innings and began the go-ahead rally with his second career hit and Parra got the final six outs for his first career save, helping the Reds beat the Mets 2-1 Sunday to salvage a win in the three-game series. "At the end of the game I didnt even really know what to do," Parra said. "It was awesome." Joey Votto had a sacrifice fly and Ryan Ludwick a tiebreaking single off Jonathon Niese (0-1), who was making his first start of the season after a being slowed by shoulder and elbow injuries this spring. Simon (1-0) made 99 relief appearances for the Reds since his previous start, on Sept. 28, 2011, for Baltimore, but manager Bryan Price tapped the right-hander because Mat Latos is rehabbing from knee and elbow operations. Price said Simon is one of the most durable guys on the staff and had no problem letting him go deep into the game. He lifted Simon for the left-handed Parra to start the eighth after allowing just four hits and throwing 79 pitches. "I was thinking I was a starter before and this is a good opportunity for me, and I tried to show the best I can," Simon said after his 20th career start. "Everything worked." Parra made 74 starts for the Brewers before switching to relief work in 2010. He retired all six batters he faced, pitching the ninth instead of J.J. Hoover, who gave up Ike Davis walkoff grand slam Saturday. Parra struck out Davis to end the Reds second win of the season then stood atop the mound for a moment before pounding his glove and walking toward catcher Brayan Pena. "Cant ask for any more for Simon and Manny Parra," Price said. Niese was nearly as effective in his debut, allowing six hits and two runs in 5 2-3 innings in front of dozens of dogs at Citi Field on Bark in the Park day. "I feel good, felt like the ball was coming out of my hand pretty well, obviously didnt have any pain," Niese said. The Mets, though, wasted an opportunity to complete a sweep ahead of a nine-game road trip that begins in Atlanta on Tuesday. The Mets finished their first homestand of the season 2-4. Simon took the mound in a game for the first time since March 24 but there was little rust. After an easy first for Simon, Davis slashed a sharp one-out grounder the opposite way down the third base line, a spot vacated by the pull shift, for a double. Davis scored on Juan Lagares single for a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Simon walked Niese and Eric Young Jr. doubled to left-centre with one out. But Daniel Murphy and David Wright struck out, starting a run of 10 in a row that ended when Simon hit Wright with a pitch. Simon started the Reds go-ahead rally in the sixth by lacing a line drive over Murphys head. Chris Heisey, in the lineup for Billy Hamilton, who has a jammed left middle finger, and Brandon Phillips each singled to load the bases. Votto followed with a sacrifice fly and Ludwick the tiebreaking hit, a single to left for a 2-1 lead. "The way he kept his sinker down and the fact he got a base hit, it was very exciting," Pena said of Simon. "He got us going." Jay Bruce grounded to first base, ending Nieses day on his 90th pitch. Gonzalez Germen relieved and pitched around Todd Frazier to face Zack Cosart with the bases loaded. Cosart grounded out to extend his hitless start to 0 for 18. Cosart then flew out to right field in the ninth. NOTES: Simon singled last season against Pittsburgh. ... Phillips has a hit in all 29 games hes played against the Mets in New York. ... After both men had disastrous outings in Tuesdays 18-4 mauling at the hands of the Tigers, its clear that neither is the best option to begin the season in Toronto. Leonardo Bonucci Jersey . That was the statement made by the French driver after he set the fastest practice time Friday at the Honda Indy Toronto. Pagenaud clocked one minute 00.0084 seconds at the 11-turn, 2.81-kilometre street course at Exhibition Place. IndyCar points leader Helio Castroneves was second in 1:00.0218 while Scott Dixon followed in 1:00.0769. Will Power, second overall in the standings, finished fourth while James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont., trailed in fifth. Pagenaud enters the weekend doubleheader fourth in the standings, 50 points behind Castroneves with two wins and one pole. His practice times were cause for optimism for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports after Pagenaud finished ninth and 12th in both Toronto races last year. "I think last year we had a lot of issues with our brakes," said Pagenaud. "It was a difficult weekend, we really never, never had a proper run. It was a nightmare. It was inside, in-house that we needed to do some work. "We ironed all those details and I think now we have a very different approach, obviously we go to each race with the will to win. Which is very different, we had the will before but we didnt believe truly that we could do it. Now we do." Pagenaud will get the benefit of the doubt after the afternoon practice was cut short by a pair of red flags that may have prevented better times. Castroneves caused a long delay after stopping on track with ann electrical issue, and the session later ended under another flag when Ryan Briscoe stalled on track.dddddddddddd Josef Newgarden had the fastest time in the morning practice. He finished 13th in the afternoon. Pagenauds pace shouldnt be a surprise even if the 30-year-old is flying under the radar in the IndyCar championship race. He finished third overall last year and has plenty of time to make a move with six races remaining ahead of the season finale at Fontana on Aug. 30. "In my position, and thats the way I think things, you could put pressure on yourself if you want to but whats the point? Whats going to happen is Im either going to win the championship or Im not going to win it," said Pagenaud. "So the goal is obviously to win and Im going to focus as hard as I can on my stuff. My car is fast, has been fast lately, and were in good shape to do it. Now we need to execute, and thats the most important." Hinchcliffes day meanwhile, got off to rocky start with his car suffering from a cooling problem that delayed his session. The issue became moot when he finally got on track -- he briefly had the fastest time and finished third in the morning. "(The car) is a handful," said Hinchcliffe. "This track is always such a challenge for us set-up wise, and were seeing that again here today even though were less than a tenth off the pace. Its hard work out there trying to get that (fast lap)." ' ' '
